In the UK, over 1.7 million disabled people receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance and over 16,000 receive the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. Currently, some 470,000 disabled people have chosen to pay their allowances to the Motability Scheme to meet the cost of having a car, powered wheelchair or scooter, through contract hire or hire purchase plans.

The Motability Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme offers an extensive range of products, including mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs, and accessories.

There are two options (contract hire and hire purchase) under the Motability Scheme that enable you to turn your mobility allowance into a mobility solution for your needs. we will help you decide which option would be best suited for your personal preference and financial budget.

Contract Hire

With the convenience of a single monthly payment, no advance payment required, and all of the essential extras listed below, ‘Contract Hire’ with Motability means worry-free mobility.

Contract Hire under the Motability Scheme includes:

o Powered wheelchair or scooter
o Insurance*
o Extended warranty*
o Servicing and repairs
o Tyres (excluding punctures) and batteries
o Breakdown cover

The period of the Motability agreement is normally 3 years but can be between 1 – 4 years, depending on the vehicle chosen. The vehicle is returned at the end of the agreed period with no further costs incurred.

*You pay an excess in the event of theft, accidental damage, third party, or an extended warranty claim.

Hire Purchase under the Motability Scheme

Some customers prefer to buy their own vehicle, particularly if special adaptations are needed. The period of the agreement is normally 3 years but can be between 1 - 5 years, depending on the vehicle chosen. You will own your vehicle after the agreement has ended.

Motability Hire Purchase includes:

o Powered wheelchair or scooter
o Insurance*

You are responsible for organising and paying for any servicing, repairs and breakdown cover. However, you do have the option to purchase Motability cover for these. The powered wheelchair or scooter usually comes with a 1-year manufacturer cover that will protect you against funding the cost of any serious manufacturer defects during the first year of ownership.

*You pay an excess in the event of theft, accidental damage, third party, or an extended warranty claim.

It would be extremely difficult for any Motability accredited dealer to bring a full range of scooters and powerchairs to your home.
However, in the store we always keep a good selection of scooters of all sizes from leading manufacturers. You are able to try out the scooters in the store and outside.

If you prefer a home demonstration:

We can arrange for a named Motability specialist to visit your home at a convenient time for you.
The specialist will explain the Motability Scheme to you in detail.
You will have the opportunity to ask all the questions you need to about the Motability Scheme, payment options and the products that are available.
The Motability specialist will ask you some questions to help understand which scooter or powered wheelchair will best suit your needs.
You will have the opportunity to test a range of products which the specialist will bring with them to the assessment.
The Motability specialist will then be able to advise you on the best solution for your needs.
The Motability specialist will complete an assessment form for you to check and sign, you will be given a copy for your own records.
If you then decide that you would like to order a scooter or powered wheelchair on the Motability scheme, the specialist will explain the sales process and help you complete an application form.
